Kellen’s Big Boy Bed!

Scene:  Todd and I are in Portland.  We call Grandma, who is home with the boys in Atlanta, to check in and see how everything went that day.

Grandma:  So how long has Kellen been able to climb out of his crib?  And how long has he been able to open the door?

Me:  Um, never!

Yep, we had been gone just a few short hours before Kellen made a break for it.

The bigs had both climbed out of their cribs a couple of times right around the 18 month mark, but that passed and they ended up staying in their cribs for a while longer.  Finn stayed in his crib until a few months after his 2nd birthday (so let’s say 10 months after he climbed out) and Riley stayed until a month after his 2nd birthday (so 7 months more).  So when Kellen started this, I just figured he would do it for a few days and we’d be done with it.

Four weeks later, he is still climbing out of his crib.  We also had moved Finn back in to sharing a room with Riley in the hopes that Finn’s middle of the night or early morning potty breaks would stop waking Kellen and throwing him in to a complete tailspin making all of us exhausted.

Tuesday night he climbed out immediately after we put him to bed and wouldn’t go back in the crib.  I eventually had to let him cry it out in his room.  We finally put one of those child proof door knob things on so he can’t open the door (though he has been known to open it if he tries long enough) (he can also open the baby gate to the kitchen, so much for that).  After just a few minutes of crying, it was quiet.  I finished reading stories to the bigs and putting them to bed and then I crept in to see where he was, because SURELY he wouldn’t be able to climb back IN to his crib (though that is exactly what I half expected to see)….here is what I found:

The 20 month old has taken over the queen size bed.  I threw a bunch of pillows on the floor around the bed to cushion any fall and left him there.

So the next morning we finally did what we should have done weeks ago!

He has slept better in the last two days/nights than he has in about 2 months.  Evidently he likes his freedom!
