Allergy

So, I mentioned in Riley’s 13 month post that he evidently has an allergy to amoxicillin.  The timeline of events…..Thursday afternoon he starts a fever of 101, I give him some Tylenol.  Friday fever spikes up to 103.  I take him to pediatrician, everything checks out, must just be a virus.  Saturday/Sunday/Monday fevers all in the 102-103’s.  Call Monday, now day 5 of fever, take him in to pedi again and he has an ear infection.  They give him amoxicillin.  Day 4 of taking the meds he breaks out in a small rash, a fever rash basically.  It is gone the next day.  Day 8 of taking meds he breaks out in a rash that gets worse and worse, pictures below.  We stop the meds, take him to pedi who agrees yes, definitely allergic to the amoxicillin.  The rash was mostly gone when he woke up Saturday morning.  We had a great day, he was happy and smiling and playful all day!  Saturday (or Sunday really) at 3am he wakes up wailing…..he’s got diarrhea and his penis is inflamed and it is definitely hurting him.  This continues all day Sunday and when I talked to the pedi they said he is most likely having an allergic reaction to something, give him Benadryl, bring him in on Monday.  Monday I take him in even though his penis looks mostly better and the diarrhea has stopped but they drew some blood to do a full allergy work-up including all of the usual things (eggs, milk, peanuts…) and to also include salmon and pine nuts because the only new thing I introduced to him was salmon pesto pasta which he gobbled up two whole bowls of!  So now we wait to see what comes back.  My poor little man!  But I have to say, when they stuck the needle in his arm today he did not even flinch and he sat there watching the blood fill two vials without moving!  One tough little dude!

13 months old

13 months?  really?  13 months came and went and I started to write this post about two weeks ago when I realized, he really is doing a lot more stuff right now that I really want to document!

1) He can say ball and balloon, both he just says “ba” but he knows!

2) He understands!  If you ask him to do something, he can do it!

“Riley, can you put the ball in the basket?” and he will!

“Riley, can you throw the ball to Finn?” and he will!

“Riley, do not throw that cup!” and he will look you in the eye, hold it up over his head, give you a sly smile and throw that cup as hard as he possibly can and then laugh.

3) Sign Language:  He can sign more….its some version of more, it isn’t the actual sign, but he is putting his hands together and definitely wants more.  He can sign eat now too!!  He is also doing the sign for milk, except it isn’t milk he wants, but I still can’t figure out what it is and it is frustrating him because he is trying to tell us something and we are clueless.

4) He is still a thumbsucker, although he used to only do it when put to sleep, now, he will keep it in his mouth a lot more often.  :(

5) I think he is trying to jump….he does this squat thing and shoots straight up into the air…he has actually gotten his feet off the ground a couple of times.  I have no idea if that is his intention but it is hilarious to watch him do it.

6) He LOVES to dance!  He’s got the cute little butt bounce dance going on, he shakes his head from side to side and claps his hands anytime there is music….I mean he even danced the other day when Finn was singing the ABC song, no music, just Finn singing.

7) He is talking in sentences….not actual words, but if you talk to him, he will say something back to you.  He’s got inflection, he’s very excited and he looks at you when he is talking like you totally understand what he is saying.  He was full-on-gossiping with his hair stylist last week.

I get these weekly letters from the hospital that the boys were born at.  They are really awesome when you have a newborn and they continue to be interesting and useful I think as they grow.  Anyway the one I got this week about my “toddler” (gasp!!!!) says this and I think it perfectly sums up exactly what he has been doing lately:

Sometimes children with older siblings do things differently from first-borns. Instead of learning words for familiar objects and names of caregivers first and then combining words into sentences, toddlers with older siblings at home may begin their journey into the world of speech by babbling in sentences. They may sound like fluent speakers of a language no one knows. Eventually, more and more real words sprinkle their babbled sentences, until they are speaking the same language as everyone else.

8) He can high five!

9) He lost a toenail.  :(  He was playing in the pan cabinet in the kitchen when a lid fell out and he started bawling/sobbing uncontrollably.  I thought maybe it just scared him cuz I thought “sure, the lid is heavy, but it isn’t that heavy, it couldn’t have really hurt him.”  Until just an hour later I took off his socks and shoes and his toenail was black!  Eeek!  Within just a few short days it was all puffy and the blood bubble under it burst and then about a week after that the nail came off.  Ick.

10) When I first started typing this I was going to say that he doesn’t really wave bye-bye but he will put his hand up in the air when you wave bye-bye to him.  sort of like a “cya later”.  But now, now he can wave bye-bye and say “bu bu”!!!!  yay!

11) Books!  He loves to read books!   He will pick them up and bring them over to me, turn around and plant his butt in my lap, so stinking cute!

12) He does this downward dog thing where he puts his hands and head down on the ground with his butt up in the air and looks through his legs.  It is hilarious, and he thinks so too!

13) He is allergic to amoxicillin.  :(  He recently had his second ear infection (not too bad for 13/14 months!) and on day 8 of taking amoxicillin he broke out in a rash, and then it got worse.  Sad baby.  :(  Big brother Finn is also allergic so I wasn’t too surprised that Riley was too.

We will miss you, Uncle Buzz

Our very near and dear friend, Uncle Buzz, is leaving tomorrow morning to go hike the Appalachian Trail for SIX MONTHS!  We are so proud that he is finally getting to fulfill one of his life-long dreams, but we are seriously going to miss him.  Todd is going to hike with him for the first three days so that he can partially fulfill his life-long dream as well as send him off on a happy note!  The boys and I took Uncle Buzz out for lunch today and the boys gave him a special gift for the trail, a harmonica.

We love you and we will miss you very much!  We can’t wait to read about all of your adventures on your trail journal and we can’t wait to see you when you get home!

Happy Trails Uncle Buzz!

Birthday Parties and Balloons

Riley is in love with balloons.  He points and says (or really screaches) “ba, ba!!!”  loves.them.  So at  Addie’s birthday party at a super awesome FUN place, Relics and Rarities, the boys got to hang in some cool cars and Riley got TWO balloons!

My What Big Shoes You Have

Finn is obsessed with shoes.  He always has been, I have countless pictures of him wearing my shoes, daddy’s shoes, his shoes.  Anytime I buy him new shoes he wants to never take them off and can’t wait to put them on.  When we went down to Florida we had to buy him a pair of sandals and he was so excited to go shopping for them and once we picked out a pair he held onto them and wore them in the store.  When I found another pair I liked and wanted to try on him, he said “No, momma, I have these shoes!”  Recently, Aunt Tay Tay came to visit and momma and Aunt Tay Tay went shoe shopping.  When we walked back in the door with our bags full of shoes, Finn proclaimed “You have new shoes for me?!?!” and he ripped open our bags, tried on all of our shoes and walked all over the house in them.  And then just last week, daddy and momma went shoe shopping and he just couldn’t wait to try on daddy’s new shoes.  Hence this video…..

Such a pretty boy

I am such a mean mommy.

One of my girlfriends daughters bows fell out of her hair when they were here recently and I’ve still got this bow sitting in the kitchen.  I just couldn’t help myself.

Boys and their puddles

We’ve had an ungodly amount of rain this year and it just doesn’t seem to be stopping.  Our front yard is just mud….all.the.time…mud.  Friday it was raining (again) and Riley was super sick.  I kept Riley in his jammies all day and Finn was in play clothes but then decided he wanted to be in his jammies too.  These are not battles I care to fight.  So jammies it was.  I had to take Riley to the doctor to make sure he didn’t have pneumonia (which he doesn’t) or a million other scary things (which he doesn’t) and when we got home I let Finn out of the car and he went straight for the puddle.  By the time I turned around he was already covered in mud.  So I let him play!  Daddy came home in the middle of Mudfest 2010, changed into his playclothes and we put Riley’s wellies on him too.  He however wasn’t a big fan, but he was really sick, I’m sure he’ll get into it some day.

Finn was running back and forth through this puddle over and over and over and over……unfortunately I was having camera malfunction and only got this short clip….and you can see daddy coming home, ha!

Feeding the birds!

Grandma and Grandpa’s place down in Florida was right next to this bird sanctuary so there were TONS of birds and we took to feeding them every day!  Pictures just weren’t capturing, so I had to take a video!  I love how Finn keeps stepping backwards as the birds keep getting closer!

Florida!

I took the boys down to Florida for a week to visit grandma & grandpa all by myself!  An 8 hour car ride with two young boys scared the devil out of me, but I am truly the most blessed person to ever walk this earth because the boys didn’t make a peep on either drive!  AMAZING!  And while the weather wasn’t as great as we hoped, it was still a really great trip!
