Hell Atlanta has frozen over. Some have been calling it Snowmageddon, some have been calling it Snowpocalypse. Both are hilarious. Basically, Atlanta had a winter storm. It started with a fast and heavy snow on Sunday night. Todd woke up at 5am because he was bound and determined to make his flight to NYC that day. I was sure that no flights were going to leave Atlanta and that he was risking his life even bothering to try to make it to the airport. So when he left at 530am, I turned on the TV and sat and watched the news, which was a really bad idea when I was already worried about him. He made it to the airport in one piece. First flight was cancelled and he was put on another. An hour or so later he called to tell me he was on the plane. And an hour and a half later, no word from him, but I knew no flights had left the airport per weather goddess Jess. Until suddenly I get a text from Jess saying his flight just took off. Amazing. He actually made it.
Meanwhile….the boys and I bundled up and headed out to play in the snow!
The boys insisted on taking these toys with them, which they promptly threw down on the ground and ignored.
And Finn wanted to make a “Grandma Bear Snowman!” This really meant that I rolled around on the ground trying to scoop up as much snow as I could while they threw some snow around.
Riley was only OK for about 20 minutes, and then he started wailing. So inside we went….how happy they are to be warm again!
And, of course my snow pants don’t fit! ha! But I pulled on a belly band to try to hold them together/up and a super stretchy shirt. It worked OK, pants kept falling down, but it had to have been better than without. This is the 29 week belly!
After our clothes dried in the dryer and Sesame Street was over, we headed back outside to give Grandma Bear Snowman her nose, scarf, hat and we tried to give her eyes too, but while we were inside the freezing rain had started and so now she (and everything) was covered in a thin (for the time being) layer of ice.
So then we went sledding! I was too nervous to let the boys go by themselves, so all 3.5 of us fit in one sled and headed down the street. Yes, the street. ha!
Slave labor
We went up and down the street a bunch of times. Our neighbors came out and we lent them a sled. Eventually we went back inside, warmed up, had lunch and naps! After naps we headed back out for more sledding with our friends The Brimmers. By then much more ice had come down and things were pretty slippery, which made for very fast sledding, but tough to walk. Riley couldn’t walk in it at all, but I just put him in the sled and pulled him everywhere. The day definitely wore the boys out, and me too!
Overnight the temps dropped way low, more freezing rain came and went and I was too nervous of the ice and all of us falling to go out in the morning. So we all went very stir crazy playing in the house all morning. Finnally in the afternoon we busted out and walked down the street to the Brimmers! We built a snow castle wall (and ate it) and played inside after we all got cold.
Wednesday morning we got in the car! We drove! We were free!!! We drove over to Alec and Aerin’s house to play with them! Aerin was born the day before Riley, in the same hospital, just a floor apart! More sledding with them and some lunch and everyone had some nice long naps!
Wednesday afternoon we celebrated our friend Davis’s 4th birthday! And that night, daddy actually made it home! And we had a surprise visit from my dad! All schools were still closed through Friday. The roads were still really spotty (ridiculous!) but the temps started to warm up.
Looking back we were really only trapped for two days, but getting word on Tuesday morning that we would most likely be trapped until Saturday was enough to have me climbing the walls. But getting outside and playing with friends helped all of us stay alive! Ha! We are all looking forward to returning to normal life again next week!
